A rare chow-golden retriever mix famed for their ability to sniff out unallocated frequencies on the radio spectrum, Zsa-Zsa came to the KYXS-LPAM team on Columbus Day from the Yavapai Humane Society.

She and her canine partner, Zelda, are currently "negotiating" who will be top dog in the studio. More on this story later!

Dateline New Orleans - - As you can imagine, I don't have much time for reporting save for saying it doesn't look great, but it could look worse.

We're holding tight in a fortified bunker on high ground, but I'm still committed to getting your news to you.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues. I've not heard what the film of the week is, but if Brian stays on track with the great films he chose last month...it's gonna be a good one. 8:30pm

Tuesday: Tuesday's dinner has been moved to Friday and Saturday. Why? Well, Tony has a guest chef coming up. Chef Dale Swann from Tucson's Canyon Ranch will be in the kitchen all weekend. What does this mean for you? Make plans for the weekend...there's gonna be a whole lotta goodness coming out of the kitchen.

Thursday: Acoustic Soul-Folk from Brooklyn, New York with Benyaro. Recently compared to the likes of Ray LaMontagne and Cat Stevens. 8pm

Yes, But Its a Dry Apocalypse!

This evening a tropical depression sits outside the window forcing me to pay closer attention to things that happened on August 24th past. On this date in 2006 the International Astronomical Union declared Pluto was no longer a planet, which was a grim proposition for those of us who were raised using clever mnemonic devices to master the universe. Arguably worse was the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius which destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum with a fury of fire and volcanic ash. Sometimes it takes a mini-hurricane to send you on a trip down memory lane. But for you in Prescott...memories will be made in the days to come.

Monday: Tonight's movie will be "Better Off Dead." This movie was our first real glimpse into the genius that is John Cusack, and the basis for a string of one liners like, "I want my two dollars." Among 80's cult phenomena in cinema, "Better Off Dead" definitely rests in the top 10. See you at 8:30pm

Tuesday: Tony is going Mediterranean and your menu is filled with all the fixins you'd be looking for if you were stuck on a little island just off the coast of Greece.

Michael Krassner and Try Me Bicycle return. Michael Krassner has worked with members of everyone in the progressive music world including Wilco, Sonic Youth, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Tortoise. He is trying out his newest material exclusively at The Raven. Try Me Bicycle is a Phoenix based band discovered and produced by Krassner. Currently they've been getting a lot of hype on NPR. You will not want to miss this show. 8pm

Friday: Local songsmith Pat Beary returns with a full band and a dazzling set. If you know Pat, you are already making plans to be here. If you don't...imagine a more hopeful version of Elvis Costello and you'll be close to the mark. 8pm

Saturday: Continuing our mining the Jazz scene of Prescott, we will be joined by Milt Cannon and The Cannonfire Quintet. I've seen Milt play before and he's dynamite. This will be his first show at the Raven, and if you're into jazz you'll love this one. 8pm

Your Album of the Week: If you find yourself turning over rocks looking for the latest great band you may have never heard of...Dr. Dog will not disappoint you with their new album "Fate". It's my favorite thing to listen to while I'm riding my bike these days.

By now many of you have heard of Michael Phelps insane domination of the Olympic games and his record setting achievements. He's an uber-athlete, an unwavering patriot, and until we are told to cease and desist by his attorneys, an ardent supporter of the Raven Cafe.

We've actually been in charge of putting together a playlist for his iPod, and if you look closely, you'll notice him sporting his Raven Cafe gear throughout his interview sessions.

All we can say is, "Thanks, and congratulations on a job well done." You may not be able to hop the next flight to Beijing, but you can rest easy in knowing the rest of the world is talking about Prescott, Arizona and The Raven Cafe right now.

Things to do this week between Track and Field events:

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues with "Heathers". This twisted classic achieved cult status the day it arrived on VHS. Shannen Doherty and Christian Slater...together in one definitive cinematic masterpiece. It's like "Beverly Hills 90210" meets "Very Bad Things" with a dash of "Friday the 13th" and a shake of "Revenge of The Nerds". 8:30pm

Tuesday: Tony is putting together a Chef's Choice Menu. Technically that means he's still working out the details and I have to go to press. Fear not...he's always on top of his game and sometimes your stomach needs a good surprise.

Also on Tuesday...Jed is going to be in to play a set during Happy Hour (4-6pm)

Thursday: Our monthly Jazz Jam Sessions are becoming quite popular amongst the players in town. It's an opportunity for musicians of all ages to get on stage together and show their best improvisational skills. 8pm

Friday: Headline Bluegrass Band from Phoenix is making their first appearance at The Raven. We know you love the bluegrass, and we're happy we found these guys. Come out and show them some support. 8pm

Saturday: Local jazz merchants, Bob Shimizu and Beginner's Luck will be playing their first show with us. This local jazz scene is so dynamic and we couldn't be happier to provide a venue for the diversity and talent of local players. 8pm

Sunday: Jonathon Best returns to the Old-Upright for a Brunch set. Remember, brunch is the most important meal of the week.

Your Album of the Week: Drivin' N Cryin' frontman Kevn Kinney released his first solo album, "MacDougal Blues" in the late 1980's. It was also his best. Not just his best, but actually a great album. I've never owned a copy because it has been out of print since the early 90's. I did have a taped copy though, and I wore it out a few months ago. Then, just last month, they rereleased the album. It's a must have (especially for you Greg).

The great thing about Sunday is that in most cases it's an opportunity to have a rest, make plans with friends, and cook a pot of rabbit gumbo. At least, that's what's happening around my house today.

You may be thinking that sounds a little weird...you may be thinking something like, "Rabbits. That's crazy talk. I only use squirrel or nutria in my kitchen." Well, I'm not going to say a pot of squirrel gumbo isn't something special, but there's just something about rabbit in August.

This week there may not be any rabbit on the menu at the Raven, but we've got plenty of other great things in store for you.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues with "Three O'Clock High". Now I have to be honest here...I've never seen or heard of this film. I do, however, get the sense that it is filled with actors who were almost famous and may have made it big had they not gotten trapped in the localized fame of the 80's. Is it an overlooked classic? He's played the Raven a few times now and has dazzled with each performance. This is one of those shows that makes going out on a Thursday night worthwhile. 8pm

Friday: From Tucson, Music Video? I'm not asking...that question mark is part of their name. They're like a lo-fi Radiohead mixed with a little Flaming Lips and a dash of the Postal Service. They're getting a lot of attention on NPR right now, and I think deservedly so. 8pm

Saturday: From Tucson (are you noting a theme here?)... Marianne Dissard and Will Elliot. This is one of those amazingly special shows that you will not want to miss. Marianne Dissard is a native of France who moved to Tucson following in the footsteps of Howe Gelb, and the guys who would become Calexico. Her new album was produced by Joe Burns and features members of Calexico and Willie Nelson's band throughout. The album plays like a 30's french western version of Bob Dylan's Pat Garret and Billy the Kid soundtrack. Will Elliot, her support for this show, was voted best local songwriter in Tucson this year and will delight you with his uncompromising uniqueness of presence. 8pm

Your Album of the Week: This week I'm all about Marianne Dissard's L'EntreDeux. She sent me an advance copy of the album and it is phenomenal. Come down to the show and get your own copy...maybe she'll even sign it.

Today I discovered that cream is great on a blackberry snowcone, that nothing really beats a summer sunset, and that Louisiana was an independent nation from 1861 to 1862 (or so they claim).

Raven Cafe is creating a great selection of African-inspired foods and contributing a portion of all food and beverage proceeds to the benefit. The music will start around 7, but come earlier if you want a quieter setting for dinner and conversation with the Lost Boys (though both will be available throughout the evening).

Jonathan Best and other local musicians will be featured entertainment.
Maria Flurry will join in with some lively percussion and the Lost Boys
are going to show us some of their drumming styles.
If you have drums,tambourines, maracas or other rhythm instruments, bring them along. And, with all that drumming, you can be sure there will be dancing.

This is not an evening for speeches. Instead you can expect a celebration of hope: good food, great people, lots of rhythm, raffles and, of course,displays and

Friday: Patrick Sweany is back. Patrick's new album was produced by the Black Keys, and perhaps unsurprisingly he sounds a lot like the Black Keys. If you missed his last swing through the Raven, you missed an amazing show. You should definitely see this if you are a fan of The White Stripes, RL Burnside, TheBlack Keys, Junior Kimbrough or John Lee Hooker. 8pm

We're excited about "Art Bar" at the Raven Cafe, and our new art manager, Travis Patterson, who is putting all of this together. Art Bar

Art Bar is a new initiative at The Raven Café that aims to display the production of artwork as an art form in itself. We believe that seeing an artists intensity and process leads to a more intimate connection with his or her product. In full support of our mission statement, Art Bar is yet another way in which our artists continually make our customers question the meaning of art and how itis done.

Tables are now positioned outside of our wine room for our patrons to sit and enjoy their meal or beverages while absorbing the bold impact that Art Bar is already having at our space. We encourage dialogue between our clientele and these energetic artists, as they are continually available to speak about their products and their work flow.

We are currently seeking artists of all mediums interested in creating in this space free of charge while gaining valuable publicity and wall space at The Raven Café. Finished pieces will be available for sale and may even be sold while in production. Artists are open to negotiations and our friendly bar staff will be happy to facilitate the transaction. Works not sold during production are professionally presented and exhibited at The Raven Café.

In 1776 we celebrated our independence by ruthlessly hunting down Englishmen. Cut to 2008...The intentional maiming of those in service to the Royal throne has become less acceptable, and even, by some standards, politically incorrect. At the Raven we've managed to reach a happy medium: "Down with King George," we like to say, but since he's long gone we don't really run the risk of offending too many people while staying ahead of the curve by celebrating what we like to call, "Vintage Patriotism."

Your Album of the Week: Tonight I'm in Houston to see Tom Waits. This week's album, Tom Waits "Heart Attack and Vine". It's a transitional album between his lounge singer work of the 1970's and his more eclectic experimentation of the 1980's. Because it fits in between these two periods it is often overlooked and under-appreciated. For my money, it's definitely one of his best. Enjoy!!!

This past weekend was filled with all sorts of excitement: Tsunami on the Square, the approximate incineration of the building, etc... Still, as said Twain, "The reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated." It's business as usual at 142 N. Cortez...We'll just be keeping a closer watch on the voltage meter.

Patrick grew up with The Black Keys, has played with the Black Keys, and his newest album was produced by the Black Keys. Would it be surprising if I told you he sounds a lot like the Black Keys? Haven't heard of the Black Keys...? Imagine a bluesier version of The White Stripes. 8pm

Thursday: Our Jazz Jam Session has been building steam over the last two months, and we couldn't be more excited. This is our goal...to provide a venue where the youngest jazz musicians in town get the opportunity to play with the most seasoned. If you love great improvised jazz music, this is your night. 8pm

Friday: It's that time again...Fire Ridge Bluegrass is back in town for a night of finger smokin' pickin' and grinnin'. Every time these guys play they pack the house. 8pm

Saturday: The Jacob Koller Jazz Band has been making waves in Phoenix for some time. They will be making their first appearance in Prescott at the Raven on Saturday night. Jazz lovers, this is a great band, and a great opportunity to help spread the word about the growing jazz scene in our community. 8pm

Sunday: Jonathon Best on the old-upright. An amazing brunch menu. Summer inspired mimosas. Need I say more?

I'm on the road with not much yet to report. You'll get a full update next sunday on New Orleans. In the meantime, let me introduce you to our new manager, Brian Spencer. Brian is a dynamite chef with 20+ years restaurant experience, a father, and beyond that, a great guy. He will be working with Tony in the kitchen a bit, but his will be the face you are seeing more of in the front of the house. You will be getting to know him better over the next few weeks, and he is putting together a little bio for me to work into the e-mail next week. Until then, know you are in great hands.

This week also marks the departure of another two of our own. Brian Scavone and Dara Cantor are both moving on to pursue school and other adventures. They have both been with us since the beginning and will be missed immensely. Stop by, visit, and see them off before the end of the week...they'll love to see you.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues with "Smokey and the Bandit." In case you forgot why Burt Reynolds is the man, definitely come check this one out. 8pm

Tuesday: Duo Sabaku, a classical ensemble from Phoenix will be on hand for a dinner performance as part of the Chaparral Music Festival. 7pm

Wednesday: Three bands, Birds and Batteries from San Francisco return for a stellar performance. Imagine Neil Young with hints of light ambient electronic music. Then Ramona Cordova returns with his blend of american gypsy folk and Francois Virot, from France, performs his take on new european folk. 8pm

Thursday: Austin favorites, The Just Desserts return to the Raven. They are the best at what they do...infectious Southwestern-Tango dance music. If you love dancing and an amazing stage show...this is your night. 8pm

Friday: Tsunami on the Square kicks off at the Raven. This years theme...The Lucky 13 Cabaret. Every year Tsunami puts on an amazing weekend of performing arts for the local community. Please come out to support this wonderful event. Friday at the Raven, Saturday on the Square. 8pm

Saturday: Flamenco guitarist Chris Burt Jacome performs at 4pm as our second part of the Chaparral Music Festival. Then...Jack Norton returns. Jack's performance as an archivist of historical music, and a magical presence on stage is unparalleled. He is a mix of Vaudville, Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliot. If you are down at Tsunami and you feel like taking a break, come down for a bit...you won't be disappointed...I promise. 8pm

As many of you may or may not know, I (Newt Lynn) am leaving the Raven at the end of the week. Fear not, I tell you. Change is in the air, but it is all for the better. I've loved being a part of The Raven from its conceptualization to the present, and will remain with you into the future. How? Well, first let me start by telling you where I am headed. I will be starting graduate school at Tulane this fall....That means....New Orleans. The stars just lined up in such a way, and so I go. However, aside from daily in-house operations, which will be turned over to a new management team, I will continue with all of the work I do behind the scenes. That means you will still be getting the weekly e-mail from me, and I will continue booking music and designing ads. Only thing is, I won't be in town to get all of your input, so I'm hoping you will take the time to e-mail me (newt@ravencafe.com). Let me know what you are thinking about music and entertainment, and keep me apprised of anyone you would like to see booked. I'll be making the occasional appearance, and you'll know when I am coming to town, so if I don't get to see you this week, we will still have an opportunity to connect. Okay, that's enough about that. There's plenty of other stuff happening this week.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues. Ty has been holding us on the edge of our seats with this weeks pick. He promises it will be a top classic. I'm guessing 1980's. Maybe "Spies Like Us", "Caddy Shack". Chevy Chase? Bill Murray? There are obvious hints at what I'm hoping for. Let's see if I guessed it right. 8pm

Tuesday: It's a going away party. Ben, Beth and I are all leaving together this weekend. Tony is putting together a Southern-Creole-Cajun-Soul menu as a way of sending us off in style. We hope you can come down, hang out, eat some great food, and visit. This is also a great way to gauge how Tony is going to do for you regarding Southern cooking. He's from Nebraska, but he's got spirit, he's a great chef, and we've known each other long enough to have had some serious meals together. Dave Manning will be on the Old Upright, and we will be around all evening. Hope to see you there. 7pm

Wednesday: Verde Watershed Wednesday. Education and Information was never put forth with such an eye toward entertainment, fun, and great atmosphere. 8pm

Thursday: Jonathon Best, Matt LaVoire and Jesse Pursley perform as Jigabe. It's like an old-time medicine show performed by the alien band in "Return of the Jedi." 8pm

Friday: A very special night of music. The local JNG Band will make their first appearance at The Raven. Then, from Phoenix and Chicago, Michael Krassner will be on hand for a rare solo performance. Krassner is best know for his work with The Lofty Pillars and Boxhead Ensemble, which may not mean much to you save the stellar group of musicians he put together for both of these groups (Jim O'Rourke from Sonic Youth, members of Dirty Three, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Will Oldham aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Edith Frost, several members of Tortoise, David Grubbs of Gastr Del Sol, and Ken Vandermark). You may not know all of those names, but you've probably heard of at least one, and if not, know this...These folks are the whose who in the world of progressive music today. Following Michael Krassner, Try Me Bicycle, a new group he is producing and promoting will be performing. Imagine a dreamy, contemplative and stripped down version of Calexico. We are definitely looking forward to this show.

Saturday: O. Allen Huddleston's "Evolving Art Show" comes to a close. Details are still in the wings, but I hear rumors of a couple of DJ's coming up from Phoenix for a dance party. Will let you know more when I know.

4:46…Sunday…87 degrees…there is a small child eating weather stripping off the corner of the house. The cat sits by, lazily eyeing the child and wondering, “How is it that I’m smarter than this critter?” There is no answer to that question.

We’ve not yet come to the understanding of the age at which our intelligence supercedes that of other mammals…or if we ever reach that point. Still, we have wonderfully organized meeting places like the Raven, so that gives us some kind of leg up.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues with “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” You remember the film…Keanu Reeves and another guy travel through time in a phone booth. The adventure that ensues…priceless. 8pm

Tuesday: Tony Burris is back as our kitchen manager.

We’ve loved having Ben, but he’s moving back east to pursue music. If you’ve seen him play, you know it’s what he should be doing. In the meantime, we’ll have Tony and Ben working together for a few weeks. What this means for you…good food. This week, Chef’s Choice.

Wednesday: Burger Night, and …From Salt Lake City…Band of Annuals return to the Raven with Golden Boots from Tucson. Classic Alt-Country with a sandy twist. 8pm

Thursday: From Philadelphia…The Asteroid #4 and From Los Angeles…The Quarter After. Last time the Asteroid #4 played we had so many people say it was their favorite show they had seen, we immediately set to work on getting them back…your demands have been met. Imagine Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd meets the Byrds. 8pm

Friday: Laura Gibson has been a dear friend of ours since she first began touring the Southwest. Now, 2 years later, she’s been featured in the New York Times, on NPR (several times), and has just finished touring with Colin Meloy of The Decemberists. She is definitely the next big thing on the folk music circuit. Ben Dickey and Drew Mills will be opening the show with an intimate performance of Blood Feathers music. 8pm

Saturday: King Bee and The Snappin’ Turtles make their final appearance at The Raven Café. This almost legendary band has developed a cult following amongst those who love to move their body parts in rhythmic ways. It’s a little bit blues, a little bit rock-n-roll, and a whole lotta goodness. 8pm

If wild animals could talk, what would they say? I imagine they would say things like, "I'm not going to eat you, but your pet looks like it might want to go on a picnic with me." Or maybe, "I've heard good things about that Raven Cafe...I'd like to meet you there for coffee and a salad." For the time being, we'll just be living with suppositions, but suppositions are fun and fill us with hours and hours of entertainment...Just like the Raven.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues. Bike Month comes to an end with our showing of "............. ....... ......." It's a surprise, and you'll love it. One thing I can tell you...Lot's of bikes. 8pm

Tuesday: Ben is whipping up an evening of "Bayou Great-Times." Etouffee, Gumbo, She-Crab Soup, Po-Boys (Oyster and Artichoke), Collard Greens, Corn Bread, and Swamp Green Salad. Sounds good? Sounds Good! Music by The Porchlights from Dolores, Colorado. Fill a cocktail shaker with 2 parts Grateful Dead, 1 part Allman Brothers, a dash of Joni Mitchell, and some Johnny Cash to taste. Shaken, not stirred. 7pm

Wednesday: Burger Night...Plus...From San Diego, The Smart Brothers bring their mix of vaudeville, harmony, great instrumentation, and a phenomenal stage show...but that's not all...Then, Eric Fresia and the Offspring from Nova Scotia will be on hand. A must see band of a father being backed by his two children (ages 9 and 11). Imagine Bob Marley if the Wailers were in grade school and from Canada. 8pm

We’re headed into May. Another crop of seniors prepares for graduation, and tourists, like turtles, are beginning to sun themselves on our lawn. At the Raven, we maintain a steady course, and plan another great week for you.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues during our second week of Bike Month. This week’s movie, “American Flyers,” stars Kevin Costner. The absence of his Oscar nomination for this film is shameful when you see Kevin’s natural bike skills. 8pm

Tuesday: Ben is putting together a menu of his favorites. He’s never made anything that wasn’t one of my favorites, so I’m excited. Music will be performed by Paul Asaro, a ragtime style pianist, who is taking time from his tour with Leon Redbone to perform for us. 7pm

Wednesday: If you love burgers, Wednesday night is your night. Local band Shady Grass will be performing with Alaska’s own Matt Hopper . Matt is a returning favorite of ours, and a few special appearances are expected. 8pm

Thursday: From Minneapolis, The Chris Koza Band returns to the Raven. Chris’ performances are always exceptional, and his band is extraordinary. 8pm

Friday: Last time Fire Ridge Bluegrass played at the Raven I was out of town. I got so many e-mails, phone calls, and notes, that I’ve been working double time to get them back here. I definitely won’t miss this show. 8pm

Saturday: Tapas done Raven style. Music is TBA so I’ll let you know as soon as I get everything worked out.

A birthday is always a special thing for us at The Raven Café, but the birthday of the business itself is by far and away the most special.

Tuesday marks our second official year of being in business, and we couldn’t be where we are if it weren’t for you.

So, we are inviting everyone down for our birthday celebration. That’s right, believe it or not, the Raven Café is two years old, and we’ve got a full week of events planned.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night celebrates the beginning of Bike Month with a Bike In Movie. Over the course of the month we will be showing BMX Bandits, American Flyers, Quicksilver, Breaking Away, and finishing the month out with Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. We are big supporters of alternative transportation and hopeyou will come out to support bicycling in Prescott and see a great film while you are at it. Tonite, its "Quicksilver." 8pm

Tuesday: It’s our birthday party. Ben and Miguel are planning a special menu that will include some of their favorites they have made over the past year and a few new things as well.

We will be running celebratory specials on Beer and Wine and… Debbie made us a birthday cake, which I’m not allowed to see until Tuesday, but then again, I have a problem with eating most of her desserts before they ever make it to the menu board, so it’s probably for the best. I hear there is a lot of Chocolate involved.

DJ Brian Angelo Scavone will be spinning from 4 til 8 and then The Moving Edge Ensemble will take the stage for an evening of great dance music. We can’t wait to see you there. All Day Long.

Wednesday: From Sedona…Kim DeLacy will be returning to our stage. She sent a bio over, so I’ll save you my interpretation and just paste in her thoughts. “ Kim experiments with many different styles, leaning towards folk rock, that are seamlessly blended to create a unique sound experience. Influenced by Ani DiFranco and many others.” 8pm

Thursday: From Portland, Oregon…Norfolk andWestern with John Weinland. Years ago I was turned on to Norfolk and Western as an accidental discovery. I’ve been working to get them here since I started doing booking and we are super excited to be hosting this show. Between tours as N and W each of the players actively tours as backing band members for M. Ward, Bright Eyes and The Decemberists. When able, they come together to create some of the most beautiful roots based Americana rock to come out of the Northwest. John Weinland is reminiscent of the Red House Painters mixed with the quieter side of Neil Young. Together these two bands will put on an amazing show. Not to be missed. 8pm

Friday: A few months ago I was in Tucson and heard an amazing band playing at a street festival. Proudly, we were able to work out a show to host them at The Raven. Tom Walbank and The Ambassadors are the best blues band I’ve yet to come across in Arizona, but blues doesn’t rightly explain their sound. They are a little Howe Gelb meets Django Reinhardt meets Son House with a whole lot of sound that could only come from the low desert. This show will be absolutely awesome. 8pm

Saturday: Jackson-Jones Jazz Trio returns for an evening of the best local jazz in town. Who will be their special guests this time? Who knows, but they a realways amazing. 8pm

Sunday: After a long week like that you’ll be needing to have a leisurely brunch. Jonathan Best will be on the Old Upright.

Newt asked Moving Edge, the improvisational band with Tom Fleishner on drums, Jesse Pursley on Trombone, Conch, Didgereedoo and vocals and Me on keys, looper and vocals to play for The Raven Cafe's 2nd anniversary celebration this Tuesday from 8 to 11. We said yes. It also happens to be Earth day.

Thursday: Erin Weaver is an amazingly talented singer-songwriter who once resided here in Prescott. She is making her first return appearance in several years with her sister. They are songbirds in the purest sense of the word. 8pm

Friday: Legendary and bordering on Mythological…King Bee and The Snappin’ Turtles will return for a rare performance. Starring Ben Dickey of Blood Feathers, and Newt Lynn and Adam Schrader of Dance, Old Scarecrow. They will be joined by special guest Quinten Stoltzfus from Philadelphia. Quinten has worked with Mazarin, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah,The Walkmen, Apollo Sunshine, Black Stoltzfus and a host of others. This will be a big night of moving and shaking. 8pm

Saturday: A Raven favorite, Dustin Hamman returns from Portland, Oregon. He’s ten instruments in one, sounds like a Colorado summer afternoon, and is impossible to ignore. 8pm

Sunday: Every Sunday Morning we serve up the best Brunch in Town with a solid offering of favorites and an ever-rotating menu of specials. Jonathon Best will be playing the old upright starting at 10am.

Your Album of the Week: Terry Allen started out as a conceptual artist from Lubbock, Texas in the 1970’s. His first album, Juarez, was made as a soundtrack to an art instillation. Demand for copies of the album were so high that he immediately became an underground country cult phenomena. His second album, Lubbock (one very thing), is nothing short of a work of genius, and has been called by many songwriters, “The best country album of all time.” I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it’s definitely in the top 5.

Graffiti on Canvas

Local Collector Matthew Files will be on hand to discuss his collection of Parisian Graffiti Artists currently showing at the Raven Cafe on Friday Night.

The “Graffiti on Canvas’’ show features six large pieces(10’ x 5’) of graffiti art, the combined work of Bom.k, Iso, Jaw, Lime, Kan,Brusk, known collectively as the graffiti crew Da Mental Vaporz from Paris, France.

As a crew and individually, the Da Mental Vaporz are known on the streets and ingalleries around the world. Their unique style of aerosol art will be ondisplay at The Raven from March 24th through May 4th.

Spring is Upon Us

Spring has flung itself upon us with beautiful abandon, hinting at a wonderful opening for our rooftop deck. We are still a couple of months away from the official opening, but just imagine how nice it will be if the current weather is any sort of gauge. Meanwhile, we have plenty planned to keep you occupied...

This Week:

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture Night continues with arguably the greatest film ever made (at least to me)...Raiders of the Lost Ark starring Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. 8pm

Tuesday: Ben and Miguel are putting together a Spanish inspired menu. The food will be amazing and the entertainment should be as well. Earth Day is right around the corner, and a benefit is being held to help raise funds for the local celebration. Vaudvillian by design, the guests will be too many to name, and too eclectic to adequately describe. Starts at 7pm.

Wednesday: Our burgers get more famous by the week, come find out what all the fuss is about.

Thursday: Musee Mecanique returns to the Raven stage from Portland, Oregon. Imagine Brian Wilson and Sparklehorse reinventing the future in a time machine filled with the memories of a 1930's boardwalk amusement park. Positively enchanting in every manner. You will love this band. 8pm

Friday: The Denise Allen Band returns for an evening of local blues and international dance moves. 8pm

Saturday: Shri weekend continues with...Shri, the international blues phenomena. There will be a lot of people here for this show, and the dancing will be reckless. 8pm

Sunday: After such a long weekend you deserve a relaxing brunch, and no one does it better than the Raven. Jonathon Best will be on the old upright.

Your Album of the Week: The Patsy Cline box set...sure, it's more than one album, but you can never have enough Patsy Cline, and few albums sound better on a warm night with the windows open and the lights dimmed. If you've already got all of Patsy's albums, try Neko Case, in my opinion the modern day Patsy Cline. Blacklisted is a great album to start with.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher and a Picture night continues with the best personal pizzas in town, great deals on pitchers, and "Romancing the Stone" starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. It's like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom meets Twins and Crocodile Dundee without the added stylings of Danny Devito and Paul Hogan. 8pm

Tuesday: Ben and Miguel are exploring a new face of Texas. Goat Cheese and Smoked Duck Nachos, Chicken Skewers with a Chipotle Peanut Sauce, Grilled Mahi with a Citrus and Mixed Berry Salad, BBQ Brisket, Veggie Enchiladas with Pueblo Mole, Cornbread, and a few other surprises.

Wednesday: Ben and Cody have created the best burgers in Northern Arizona. Join them on their quest to conquer the rest of the country.

Thursday: It's Soul Food night with musical guests Monday Night Bluegrass. We had a blast last time they were here, and this show promises to be even better. 7pm

Friday: Rolling Stone Magazine says, "Her vocal and lyrical beauty is unmatched." This American Life says, " She sings with a sweet, heartbreaking majesty. Her songs are beautiful, timeless, and transporting." She's been lauded all over the country and throughout the rest of the world as captivating, stunning, and amazingly talented. Wednesday: From Portland, Oregon...Carrie Clark returns to the Raven. A growing favorite here, and so good we billed her with Mark Olson. She sounds a little like the Cowboy Junkies meet Merle Haggard meet Neko Case in Patsy Cline's sepia-toned jukebox. Also, from Seattle, Washington, Camille Bloom will be opening the show sounding a bit more like Shawn Colvin meets Patty Griffin meets Elvis Costello. 8pm

Thursday: Jonathon Best has played here with more bands than you can count on both hands, but none showcase his talents better than Jonathon, alone with a keyboard, a host of household appliances, and a looping machine. 8pm

Friday: Local band Big Daddy D and The Dynamites recently won the title of "Arizona's Best Blues Band," and was sent to Memphis for the national competition. It's hard to compete with the best of Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee and Michigan when it comes to the blues, but no matter, guitarist Freddy Cisneros has already played with some of the most legendary players you can think of. There may be better blues bands in the Mississippi Delta, but not much better. Come see why these guys are great. 8pm

Saturday: Long Live Logos return for a night of fusion idie-funk in the stylings of Grandmaster Flash meets Bright Eyes. Local band Madison County shares the bill. This promises to be a fun night. 8pm

Your Album Of The Week: R.E.M. is inarguably the biggest band to come out of Georgia in the 1980's, but there was another band, critically praised, but tragically overlooked and forgotten. Guadalcanal Diary was similar to REM in musical stylings, but lyrically, much more literary and decipherable. Their first album, "Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man" is a masterpiece of 80's southern college guitar-driven jangle-pop.

Saint Pat's at The Raven Cafe

St. Patrick's Day is upon us.

Around town folks will be crawling from pub to pub (technically bar to bar), which forces us to ask the question, "Why drag yourself along the sidewalk to a green Miller Lite when you can sit upright at The Raven, choose from any one of our great Irish imports, have a traditional Irish dinner, and listen to raucous piano music?"

Brian is putting together a number of beer specials for you, or, if you don't drink, have a green tea. Sure, the tea may be Chinese, but it's officially endorsed by the Dublin Leprechaun Tea Society (I think).

Ben and Miguel are working up a menu to feature many Irish favorites such as bangers and mash, corn-beef and cabbage, pot pies, and lamb.

Dave Manning, a returning favorite, will entertain you throughout the evening with his engaging piano stylings that fit in somewhere between Jerry Lee Lewis, Greg Brown, and Tom Waits.

I'll be sending out an e-mail for the rest of the week by tomorrow evening. In the meantime, I worked up a little story for you if you are interested.

Why the Leprechauns Moved To Alabama

1845 promised to be a good year for the people of Connacht. As the last pints were raised to the new year, spirits were high with boundless possibility.

The local planning committee had been busy tying up loose ends for the coming "Annual Connacht Potato Festival", and only a faint worry was cast over what mischievous prank might be unleashed by the local leprechauns when the tourists came round this year. The previous year had seen the Guiness kegs drained and refilled with Tangy (an early version of Tang), and the year before that Mr. Donnely's champion pedigree sheep dogs had been neutered. Nothing more than monkey business to be sure, but it was always a little embarrassing to the conservative locals since no one had actually seen one of these "leprechauns," and consequently were unable to pin the blame on something no one else believed in anyway.

The Leprechauns, for their part, had been living out in the woods for generations. They were a bitter bunch, small in stature, and constantly seeking retribution for what they called, "centuries of height discrimination."

To be fair, not one of them had sought employment in recorded leprechaun history, so it's hard to determine if "height discrimination" actually plagued their community. Still, they made do grabbing the occasional sheep or chicken that strayed too far from the group, prolifically reproducing like rabbits in the shamrock patch, and picking up loose change (kept in a community pot).

In truth, it's most likely their frustration came about from locals occasionally stumbling upon their change pots and stealing off with them. As the leprechauns saw it, 1845 was going to be their year.

Tuatha, or Tuty as he was known in the leprechaun community, had been head of the mischief committee for the past 300 years.

Short on ideas, and fearful of repetition, Tuty asked the advice of his old friend Clontarf, the amateur chemist and part-time hack wizard of the group. Clontarf had an idea. He'd been working on a potion that could be spread across the potato fields and would turn the crops sweet potato orange…a horrific notion since the town's reputation had been built on the classic Irish white potatoes everyone loved and celebrated.

Unfortunately, Clontarf's potion turned out to be a pathogenic water mould (later identified as Phytophthora infestans). Within months the mould had spread across Ireland, devastating potato crops. Within a year the Irish potato famine was on.

As Ireland reeled in devastation, the leprechauns hit the road. A simple prank could be forgiven; a 7 year famine tends to raise the bar of national frustration, and led to a banishment of all things imaginary in Ireland.

Being on an island, the road can only go so far. Soon, a little ship was built and the leprechauns set sail. The trade winds blew, the boat rocked, and a hundred years later land was spotted. As the ship washed up on shore the leprechauns knew they had found a new land indeed.

Large wheeled vehicles sped up and down the beach flying bright red flags of stars and bars. The music was loud, electric, and the tune was "Sweet Home Alabama." The new land was called Mobile.

For the leprechauns, life in Mobile has been filled with ups and downs. On the up side, the concern over height discrimination has taken a back seat to weight problems brought on by an new fried diet and the recent mullet fad. On the down side, change doesn't linger on the ground long enough to build up the community pot much. Still, life in the new world has been quiet, relatively uneventful, and relaxing. That is, until…

The Raven Crew - Back in Action!

At least, that's the information I'm able to put together as I start typing this e-mail. There's much to report, and much that will remain unreported (some things are best left behind borders).

It’s been a week since last our paths crossed…We know you missed us, and we missed you, but we got a lot of work done, and a little relaxin’ as well.

The first big steps have been taken toward the completion of the rooftop deck, and we are excited to be able to share the process with you as it happens. This past week accounted for a lot of the internal structural work, and the weeks to come will see a lot of external activity as work begins on the wave pool and zip line (this may or may not be true). Feel free to inquire along the way. It’s going to be a learning process forus all.

In the meantime, it’s back to business…

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher, and a Picture Night continues with an eclectic array of great pizzas and the beginning of 80's adventure month...Crocodile Dundee starring Paul Hogan who later went on to Subaru commercial fame. 8:30pm

Tuesday: Ben and Miguel are back in the kitchen for a Welcome Back Chef’s Choice Menu. Expect a variety of favorites prepared by the best in town. Music for the evening will be provided by the Prescott Playboys. Dinner and Dancing starts at 6pm.

Wednesday: It’s Burger Wednesday as we continue to show what it means to have the best burger in town. Then…it’s Verde Watershed Wednesday, an evening of art, music, and learning about The Verde Watershed Conservation group.

Thursday: We’ll be serving up Creole-Soul Fare,and setting the stage for a musical favorites return…From Austin, The Just Desserts are back and bringing a full band this time. Every show garners a bigger turnout and a better response. Come out and see what all the fuss is about. 8pm

Friday: Miguel’s cooking ribs…then…It’s a little Cabaret, it’s a little burlesque, it’s a little Billie Holiday dancing on Tom Waits' gramaphone player in a sepia toned New Orleans hotel room. It’s Vermillion Lies…7pm…Then it’s the festival launch jazz jam session for the Prescott Jazz Summit. Rumor has some of Duke Ellington’s Orchestra in town. We make no promises they will show up, but we’re working hard to get them here. 8pm

Saturday: Tapas, Raven Style, and Dennis Garvey and Remedy return for a night of southern-inspired swamp-blues boogie. Think the New Orleans Radiators meets Little Feat meets John Mooney. 8pm

Sunday: The Raven welcomes you to a beautiful brunch with music by a stripped-down version of The Just Desserts. This is a not to be missed opportunity to experience a beautiful brunch with these special musicians. Music starts at 10am.

Your album of the week: Duke Ellington “Ellington at Newport 1956.” The crowd literally went so crazy that Ellington had to leave the stage for a moment to let them calm down. It’s one of the few times you can hear jazz fans get as worked up as teenagers seeing Elvis or John Lennon for the first time.

DJ for a Day - This Could Be You

If you saw the article in last Friday's Scene section in the Daily Courier, you may have just heard about KYXS, Coyote Radio's Day for a Day event.

Every Saturday and Sunday in March, we are opening Studio A at The Raven Cafe for people to put their favorite tunes on the air.

The sessions include a Coyote Radio volunteer to do the tech stuff and help you out. DJ's can use songs from our library or bring their own on CD or a USB drive.

The sessions are recorded for broadcasting over our low power AM channel (AM1670) and webcasting, when our radio signal goes on line, April 1st. Because the session is not live, any mistakes can be edited out.

This Weekend on Coyote Radio

Howdy Coyotistas!
Our seventh weekend of experimental community radio broadcasting on AM 1670, started with volunteer Phil Hammon and I tweaking the station mixing board, software and preamps.

Some good news came out of this: the weekend broadcast can now be heard on south Mount Vernon Street, down White Spar Road to town and spots further north in town. Amusingly, the signal is very strong directly in front of Yavapai County Jail on Gurley Street. Please let us know when you first hear the broadcast so we can adjust our broadcast map.

Another cool Bit of Coyote this weekend: Prescott Mayor Jack Wilson appears on Prescott Arts Beat on our sister station, KJZA (89.5FM) this Sunday, March 9th at noon. Hizzoner will be answering questions about his 2050 Visioning Committee and wait til you hear this Andrew's 5 Big Questions!

Sometimes wires cross, signals turn to static, and in the mix of it all there is confusion. Somehow I misunderstood the actual closing date. We will not be open this Sunday through next Sunday. I was a day off, and I apologize for any brunch plans that may have been thwarted as a result.

Wednesday Night: Local Musician, Teacher, and all around Friend of the Jazz Community Mel Zelnick recently passed away. Services are being held Wednesday, friends and musicians are coming in from around the country, and a tribute concert is being held at the Raven Wednesday Night (Tonight). It promises to be a night of memories, new musical comraderies, and great Jazz. 7pm

Saturday: DJ O. Allen Huddleston will be on hand to spin a set of ambient, eclectic, danceable soul music. 8pm

This Week, On A Very Special "What's Rockin'. . . ?"

Couple of things...

First, it's beautiful outside. Second, We are going to be closed next week for some structural work needed for the upcoming rooftop deck.

It will only be March 3rd through the 9th, and we promise the 10th will be business as usual. Thanks for your patience and understanding. We are only doing these things to make your experience with us even better. In the meantime, the upcoming week is very important. If you can only make it out one night this week make it Tuesday...see below.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher, and a Picture Night continues. This weeks film is Stanley Kubrick's "Lolita." Great pizzas combined with scandalous films...it's what the best Hollywood foundations are built on. 8:30pm

Tuesday: Comes a time, once a year, when Ty has a Birthday. Ty likes to keep his birthdays quiet. We ask, "Why?" When a man is turning 33 years old it's important to have all of your friends around to help you celebrate. That's why we're asking you to come down on Tuesday night and help us celebrate Ty's 33rd Birthday. Ben and Miguel are putting together a fabulous Island inspired menu, and the Prescott Playboys will be on hand with special guests and surprises. Music starts at 7pm.

Thursday: Creole-Soul Food and a benefit for the Prescott Area Women's Shelter. PAWS cares for local women who are in abusive situations. The benefit will help provide funds for the shelter. The Raven will donate 10% of the evenings earnings, so, the more people who come out the better.

Music for the evening will be provided by Jonathon Best from 6pm until 7:30pm...Then, KING BEE and THE SNAPPIN' TURTLES will take the stage for an evening of snake handling and spiritual revivalist dance music. Evening starts at 6pm...Please come support PAWS for doing so much good work in the community.

Friday: Miguel will be cooking up some great ribs with all the fixins, as well as a whole bunch of other goodies. Adam Schrader will spin a Revival set of all the classics you forgot you loved so much.

Saturday: Tapas, Raven-Style. It's a classic concept, re-invented the way we love to do things. DJ O. Allen Huddleston will be on hand to spin a set of ambient, eclectic, danceable soul music. 8pm

Sunday: We will not be open this Sunday through next Sunday.

Your album of the week: MV and EE & The Golden Road "Gettin' Gone."
Imagine Neil Young, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Junior all working together on something that might sound like an alt-country album and you are probably pretty close to the mark. I drove back from Phoenix late a few nights ago and couldn't have asked for a better soundtrack.

Jazz Vibraphonist Jim Cooper Sits in with The Jackson-Jones Jazz Trio this Saturday!

Jazz vibraphonist Jim Cooper has played with greats like Milt Hinton, Frank Wess, Jodie Christian, Barrett Deems, Gordon Brisker, Mark Levine, Ernie Krivda, Joe Lovano, and Ira Sullivan. He's released 2 CDs on Delmark Records -- Tough Town and Nutville (both of which received three-star reviews in Jazz Times and Downbeat.

Currently a resident of Sagatuck, MI (from whence he drives a few hours for Chicago gigs about once a month), Cooper was born in 1951 in a musical family on Chicago's South Side. While studying at Michigan State University he bought his first set of vibes, and began playing in a free-form jazz workshop -- playing totally improvised music -- led by drummer Poncho Vera.

The Jackson-Jones Jazz Trio, stalwarts of the NorAZ jazz scene, heard on Coyote Radio's jazz shows and so frequent the Raven stage they should just move over to a cafe table and rest on the weekdays 'cause we'll be groovin' to 'em again soon enuf - will perform with Jim Cooper at 8pm on Saturday.

Long time listeners to Coyote Radio will remember our good friend Roger Gregg, an ex-pat living over in Dublin, Ireland and the brains behind Crazy Dog Audio Theatre. We've featured some of his great comedy radio work on Coyote Radio: the sci-fi send up Big Big Space ("Invasion from Planet Vampire") and his seminal Bill Lizzard PI stories, featuring Cyril the Pooka.

Strange Sighting on the Dance Floor Last Nite

Last night at The Raven Cafe, DJ Bean 5000 was halfway through his set, when a sports mascot allegedly burst onto the dance floor and began to shake his furry thang.

The only evidence is this murky cellphone video and there have been claims that this is not an authentic sports mascot sighting, but rather an elaborate hoax, perpetrated by anthropomorphic woodland creatures.

Clearly, more research is needed. Mascot run amok or magical beastie?

Our fourth weekend of experimental community radio broadcasting on AM 1670. Sigh, just a month ago we were hauling the transmitter up on that roof and trying to get that grounding rod hammered into this Arizona "soil."

Last Night at The Raven Cafe: The Jon Rauhouse Sestet

Saturday nite: The Raven Cafe was especially proud to present an evening with The Jon Rauhouse Sestet. Jon is an unbelievable musician best known for his multi-instrumental backing of Neko Case and Calexico, his slide and pedal steel work setting a standard for musicians everywhere. Aside from that, he is an internationally recognized talent that sells out shows around the world.

Jon played here last May, and the response was overwhelming. Folks came from all over the state to see the show, and Jon sent us a note saying the Raven was definitely one of his favorite places he has ever played and you were one of the best audiences. This coming from an Austin City Limits regular.

PHX area bands Tierra Del Fuego and Farewell Review opened for him.

The full house included folks bringing in their kids to see the famed string man, out of towners come up to Everybody's Hometown for the gig and a Who's Who of the Prescott Cafe Crowd.

A wonderfully mellow night with the sounds of hawaiian guitar and harmony singing drifting back towards Studio A in The Raven Cafe.

Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, Mr. Orchid Fingers and the Return of the King Bee!

Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow on Saturday, saw his shadow, and predicted six extra weeks of winter for 2008, but then again, he could just be a lazy groundhog looking to get in some extra sleep.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and we have plans to make it a special night for you and yours. For one night only, the Raven will be taking dinner reservations, providing table service, and turning itself into the most romantic dinner atmosphere in Northern Arizona. Ben and Miguel have put together a 5-Star Prix Fixe 5 Course Menu with a complimentary Champagne Split, and a gorgeous dessert by Debbie. We will be offering two seatings: 6pm and 8pm. That has a lot to do with the fact that a few of us come from the southland, and it's our way of sharing some of our heritage with you. Mardi Gras is all about celebrating, relaxing, eating some good food, hanging out with friends, listening to good music, and letting the good times roll. We'll be cooking up alligator, crawfish, rattlesnake, gumbo, ettouffe, and a few other surprises. We've got plenty of beads, MoonPies, and the best selection of New Orleans music this side of Louisiana. It will be a fun night for everyone. 6pm - until...

Wednesday: Ben's Famous Burger Night...come find out why everyone is saying we are making the best burgers they have ever had. It's an art form around here.

Thursday: Creole, Southern and Soul Food Night continues. We believe in the power of comfort food.

The AM 1670 broadcast is currently heard in Southside Prescott. Reports of people hearing the show range from Haisley Homestead to the Compass Bank parking lot. The signal seems strongest currently during the day and car radios seem to pick it up better.

It's late, I'm fireside, and I've attached a long wire rod to Drew Mills head in order to get better wireless reception. He's standing on a chair and won't give me long to get this done, so I'll move forward...

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher, and a Picture night continues and has started many asking if it may be possible that Prescott has begun to enter the ranks of New York and Chicago regarding the Country's best pizza. Your movie...The Never Ending Story...8:30pm

Tuesday: Ben, Miguel, and Shana are heading far east, and preparing a Vietnamese menu guaranteed to dazzle and delight. Dave Manning, Alaska's Piano Man, returns and will be playing from 7pm until he can't play anymore.

Friday: From everywhere...Paleo returns from a never-ending tour that is bringing him back for his third performance at the Raven. Imagine Devendra Banhart playing seaside songs to a seahorse companion. 8pm

Saturday: O. Allen Huddleston spins an eclectic mix of up-tempo, down-tempo, and every tempo between.

This weekend, the Coyote Radio Community Radio Broadcast (on AM 1670) includes:

* Leslie Stevens' Route 66 RockIt Radio Show - featuring a alternate take on the 1960's canon of great pop music. The Ash Fork DJ includes a heap of Big Boss Hits you've probably never heard before. Like a roadtrip through time with the hippest cat behind the wheel.

* Democracy Now - Amy Goodman and company also bring an alternative, to the news pumped at you by most media outlets. Remember, KYXS - Coyote Radio, is the only radio partner with Democracy Now in Yavapai County.

* Coyote Radio Theater's famed Radio Avenger makes an appearance.

* In For Questioning - Angie Johnson-Schmit interviews the King of Irish Noir writing, Ken Bruen. This crime fiction god has been nominated for every major award in his shadowy field and frequently being called the "european Jim Thompson" hasn't hurt his standing with Arizona fans either. Turns out, for writing such haunting, razor-edging work, Ken is a lovely fella. Who knew?

* Cameron Lange, of the Prescott College Radio Club, takes us for a walk through the rock landscape with a short DJ set.

Well, this past week was a screaming success. The dinners were raved about, the entertainment was unparalleled, and the weather was beautiful. We may not have had much to do with that last one, but we sure know how to capitalize on it. This week promises more of the same, and we are looking forward to seeing you out.

First order of business is to give you a heads up on a few things on the horizon. Mardi Gras is just around the corner. February 5th is the day, and down south the debauchery will be mind numbing. We will be keeping things a little more tamed down while still sharing some of the things that make this holiday so special. Our pure Louisiana menu will be one of the highlights, but we'll also share the best of the sounds, the colors, the festivities, and the beads. February 9th will see the return of Jon Rauhouse. As multi-instrumentalist and all around sideman for Neko Case and Calexico, Jon Rauhouse has garnered a tremendous amount of publicity. On his own he puts on a show of some of the best musicianship to be found in this country. Last time we were standing room only and the response was amazing (Jon said we were by far and away one of his favorite venues, and that you were easily one of the best crowds. Admission will be free, and we encourage everyone to come out
. Lastly, February 14th is Valentine's Day. We will be hosting two seatings...6pm and 8pm. Jonathon Best will be on the piano, Ben and Miguel are planning a great full course menu, and Debbie is putting together what promises to be a legendary dessert course. Reservations are highly recommended.

Now, on to the coming week...

Our new art show is the collected works of Michaela Carter. Michaela is a Prescott resident, artist, and writer. We are happy to be hosting her first show at The Raven.

Monday: Pizza, Pitcher, and a Picture week continues with a menu of new pizza creations by Ben. The Monday Night Movie is "Fantasia," starring a whole host of animated characters, colors, explosions, and sounds. Could 1967 have happened without this film? Highly doubtful. 8:30pm

Tuesday: Ben, Miguel, and Shaina are hopping the pond and heading for Scotland. Forget what you thought you knew about Scottish food; Haggis is not on the menu. Exactly what they have in store remains a mystery, but then, so is the Loch Ness monster, and you wouldn't miss a chance to figure that one out, would you? Dinner starts at 5pm.

Wednesday: Ben's famous Burger Night. Last week we fielded more than a few responses from folks that these were the best burgers they had ever had. Vegetarians will have plenty of options as well.

Thursday: Swamp and Soul Night continues as Ben re-creates some of the Southern Dishes we've become known for.

Friday: Miguel is doing his famous ribs and fish menu. I've had ribs from some of the most legendary rib and bbq joints in the country, and Miguel's are as good or better than the best out there.

Also on Friday...DJ Bean 5000 returns to the Raven for a night of dance music guaranteed to move you across the room and into a number of positions you may have doubted your body capable. 8pm

Saturday: Miguel is continuing to re-define Tapas. These aren't the traditional Spanish or Mediterranean presentations, but rather, our own, Raven take on a classic.

Pat Beary will be performing Saturday Night. Rumor mill has a few friends playing with him. We'll have to see, but every time Pat plays he gets a great response. We're glad to have him back. 8pm

Your Album Of The Week...Traffic Sound "Yellow Sea Years" This is Peruvian Psych-Rock-Soul recorded between 1968 and 1971. It's a little bit Traffic meets Santana during the summer solstice at Machu-Picchu. Don't let the summer solstice thing fool you though, you'll love it year around.

Victoria Williams and Howe Gelb Concert amazing!

The July 17 concert by Victoria and Howe was a fantastic mix of magic , musical bliss and low key fun.

The usual crowd of Raven Cafe habitues was augmented by serious Howe and Victoria fans who drive in from points all around the compass, plus those hometown culture lurkers who don't make it downtown all that often, plus Vitoria and Howe themselves.

I say that because, besides putting in a couple of loose, fun, musically riveting sets, Howe and Victoria hung out talking with fans on the sidewalk and in the hallways of the Raven.

Angie and Andrew spent a lot of time climbing ladders, making adjustments on the roof and generally working on the Coyote Radio transmitter and inside gear to get the first broadcast by Coyote Radio (AM1610) ready by show time.

We did make show time and it was a real charge to hear Howe doing his sound check with that great rumbley voice of his coming out of my car stereo on Cortez Street.

We got a chance to meet Jim Blackwood, a tech guy and morning DJ on Tucson's venerated community radio station KXCI. Jim recorded the show for Howe's archives as well as gave out some great advice to Coyote Radio folks and the mixing crew at The Raven.

Jim was part of a whole Tucson posse that arrived for the gig. We hope they had a good time and we hope to see more of them as The Raven Cafe and Coyote Radio play host to more evenings of great music like this one.

Howdy & welcome from Prescott, AZ's coolest venue for music and art, The Raven Café. If you're looking for a place where you can enjoy fab food, great beer and wine (seriously huge selection!), and killer coffee while you groove to great tunes and awesome art, then you've found your spot! And if that isn't cool enough for ya, I'd like to point out that Coyote Radio has its studio co-located at The Raven Café. That's right, there's a low-power AM community radio station right there in the same building! More about that later...

So what's this all about? Well, this blog is a way for you to keep up with scheduled music and arts events AND a place to chat about shows/events/happenings you've attended. Check back often for updates & to leave questions and comments about performances or art shows.

First up is a biggie. Saturday, July 7 we're thrilled to host an evening of music with Howe Gelb and Victoria Williams. I'm an enormous fan of both musicians & was stunned to hear they'd agreed to perform in this little mountain town...together!!! In addition to this ultra-fab show, Coyote Radio's low-power AM radio station, KYXS, will go live. For all the folks who've been working to see community radio in Prescott, this is a huge deal! It's been over 8 years in the making, but on 07/07/07, Coyote Radio will finally be on the air.
